The Hawaiian Creation Chant · 2,102 Lines · 16 Epochs · The Mother of All Genesis Stories
The Kumulipo is the most comprehensive creation chant in human history. Composed circa 1700 CE for the birth of Chief Lono-i-ka-makahiki, it traces the origin of the universe from primordial darkness through the evolution of all life to the genealogy of the Hawaiian ali'i. It is simultaneously a cosmological text, an evolutionary taxonomy, a genealogical record, and a royal charter. No other creation text on earth approaches its scope, its scientific accuracy, or its philosophical depth.
In 1897, while under house arrest following the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen Liliʻuokalani translated the Kumulipo into English — the first Hawaiian monarch to do so. Her translation is not merely linguistic. It is an act of sovereignty: a declaration that the Hawaiian people's understanding of creation, of history, and of their own divine lineage would not be erased by conquest.

What is the Kumulipo?
The word Kumulipo means "beginning in deep darkness" — kumu (source, beginning) + lipo (deep darkness, the abyss). It is a mele koʻihonua — a genealogical chant of the highest sacred order — that traces the origin of all life from the primordial darkness of Pō to the birth of a specific ali'i.
The Kumulipo was composed for the birth of Chief Lono-i-ka-makahiki, born circa 1700 CE on the island of Hawaiʻi. It was chanted at his birth, at important ceremonies throughout his life, and at the births of his descendants. It was the most sacred text in the Hawaiian world — not written down, but carried in the memory of the kahuna (priests) who were its custodians.
The chant was first written down in the 1860s by King Kalākaua's court scholars. It was published in Hawaiian in 1889. Queen Liliʻuokalani translated it into English in 1897. Martha Warren Beckwith produced the definitive scholarly translation in 1951.
Why It Matters
The Kumulipo is the intellectual property of the Hawaiian people. It is the foundation of Hawaiian cosmology, the source of Hawaiian identity, and the charter of Hawaiian sovereignty. It establishes that the Hawaiian ali'i — and through them, all Hawaiian people — are the direct descendants of the gods who created the universe.
It is also, as this analysis will demonstrate, the most scientifically accurate creation text ever produced by any human civilization. Its evolutionary sequence — from primordial slime to marine invertebrates to fish to birds to land animals to humans — anticipates Darwin by centuries. Its understanding of ecological interdependence anticipates modern environmental science by millennia.
The Kumulipo is not mythology. It is the most sophisticated cosmological text in human history, encoded in the most beautiful literary form ever created: the Hawaiian chant.
The Structure of the Kumulipo
The Pō Section (Wā I–VIII)
The first eight wā take place entirely in Pō — the sacred darkness. This is the cosmological section: the evolution of life from primordial slime through marine organisms, fish, birds, and land animals. It is the Hawaiian account of the origin of the universe and the evolution of life on Earth.
The Ao Section (Wā IX–XVI)
The final eight wā take place in Ao — the world of light. This is the genealogical section: the divine ancestry of the Hawaiian ali'i, traced from the sky father Wākea and earth mother Papa through hundreds of generations to the specific chief for whom the chant was composed. It is the Hawaiian royal charter.
